Editoriale · Il lavoro dentro l’inquadratura

Festival DOC — 5 November 2026: Work within the frame

5 November 2026 edition · Two events at the Festival dei Popoli at Cinema Astra in Florence, with an original editorial on work and the forms of conflict. These are events on today’s programme, not new announcements by the organisers.

Editorial · Work within the frame

Work often becomes visible when it stops: a strike, an occupied factory, a demonstration. Yet before open conflict there are repeated gestures, imposed schedules, bodies learning to withstand fatigue. Documentary can connect these two kinds of duration: the exceptional event that makes the news and the everyday experience that makes it intelligible. Choosing how much time to devote to a gesture is already a political decision about form.

Today’s programme at the Astra brings together works by women filmmakers from different periods. We suggest approaching it with a question: where does power take shape? It may lie in the rhythm of a machine, the opportunity to speak at a meeting, or the distance between a decision and those who bear its consequences. Critical attention must explore how these relationships become perceptible, without reducing the people filmed to illustrations of a ready-made argument.

Telling the story of a struggle also means making room for disagreements among those involved. A viewer’s agreement should not be secured by erasing hesitation, division or the personal costs of a decision. Solidarity becomes more concrete when we understand its difficulties. This is the perspective we propose for today: to consider material conditions alongside the forms of storytelling. We offer no advance judgement of these works, which we have not watched for this edition.

In Focus · American Dream, today at Cinema Astra

Today, Thursday 5 November 2026, at 17:00, Cinema Astra in Florence screens American Dream by Barbara Kopple, as part of the Festival dei Popoli tribute to the filmmaker. The official listing identifies it as a US film from 1990 and outlines its account of the Hormel Foods workers’ dispute.

The festival’s description also highlights divisions within the trade union movement. This suggests a question for viewers: how can a documentary sustain attention to a struggle while also making its disagreements intelligible? This commentary identifies a question to explore, rather than offering a judgement of the film.

In Focus · Three perspectives in the morning programme

Today, 5 November at 10:00, Cinema Astra’s programme brings together In the Lorinc Spinnery by Márta Mészáros, The Zone by Güliz Sağlam and Feryal Saygılıgil, and Layers of Dispute by belit sağ. Titles and filmmakers’ names are reproduced as listed by the cinema. This is a separate event from the screening of Care and Affection reported yesterday.

A programme of several works invites us to consider the relationships between films. Their sequence can generate unexpected comparisons, provided each work retains its particular qualities. The question therefore also concerns programming: what connections does it propose, and what differences does it allow to emerge?

Conversations · Who gets to speak?

Questions from the editors. Today this section offers a starting point for discussion based on the events above; it is neither an interview nor a report of a meeting. When a film documents a conflict, who is given time to explain their reasons? Who appears only through somebody else’s account? And what room remains for a voice that contradicts the prevailing direction of the editing?

The length of an answer, an interruption or a silence can change the weight of someone’s presence. Discussing this means moving beyond agreement with a film’s subject and questioning how it asks us to listen. It is a critical conversation that can begin in the cinema and continue after the screening.
